Great day! Sunny, not too hot, a perfect fall day. My friend and I drove around for hours taking pictures of all the wonderful fall treats. The above pictures are not ours, have not downloaded them yet. We got some great shots, mostly in the country, trees, pumpkins, apples, the views, silos, old barns and of course we had to go to Harriet Tubman's house. My friend loves anything to do with Harriet Tubman, so she got some cool pictures of her house, the signs and all of that. We put many miles on the car, but it was worth it. Just to totally take in all the beauty of the day.We had to go downtown, to pick up Hannah from her Media Group. We were early, so we got some great shots of the old building, now wasting away. Such great detail, interesting features. I think I could spend a whole day wandering around looking at the architecture done so long ago. My friend has a new camera, I told her she looked like an investigator for CSI. It is huge and clicks away like crazy.
Melanie had a nice Birthday. She ditched us and went with Charlie to see Spamalot. It was playing in town, and it was Charlie's present to her. They loved it. I was bummed because she wasn't home until late. So the rest of us went to this great 50's diner and ate way too much food and had awesome deserts. We sat at the booth and laughed and laughed and just had a great time. Melanie did not get home until 11:30 pm and could not understand why her sisters did not want to get out of bed to see her open her gifts. Her sisters were mad they missed it when they found out the next day. What we usually do is the night before, totally decorate the house with streamers, signs, balloons, etc. We have a nice party with family and a few close friends and do the whole cake and present thing. This year it was off a bit due to the play. Last year we took her and 2 friends to NYC for a night and to see 2 Broadway shows. It was tons of fun, but too expensive. This year she just wants to take a few friends out for dinner at Olive Garden, she loves that place. Sounds good to me.
I tried to make homemade chicken soup today. My stock was totally messed up. Totally, as in the whole thing evaporated. The kitchen smelled great, but there was only a little broth. Does anyone know how to make stock? Why does it call for so little water and how can you make a decent soup out of such a tiny bit of water? As you can see, I am trying a new theme in my life called Adventures in Cooking. I am determined to start fixing fresh, healthy meals. What kills me is I even followed the directions (sort of) in the Joy of Cooking cookbook. It flopped anyway. My mom use to make the best homemade soup, I loved her chicken soup and would give anything to know how she did it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
I don't have to work on Monday, I LOVE 3 day weekends. I'm thrilled that we have that extra day off. It makes Sunday nights so much more fun. The girls want to see Gone With the Wind, so I'm going to rent it and have a family night. I haven't seen it in years and years, but I am really looking forward to it. I remember seeing it with my mom when I was a young girl, we went to this fancy movie theatre and it was a really special night. One for the memory bank.
Right now Hannah is sleeping. David is at the movies with the other two and it is just me and the dogs and cat hanging out. I love the silence, love the stillness, love the fall air coming in the window. I am going to go to bed in a bit, but gotta read my new People and Oprah that came. Love to read mindless, fun stuff right before bed. Some of the books I'm reading are a bit intense so I need some mind candy.
Have a great night!

Sounds like a fun drive....I haven't done that in a long while with the price of gas these days...although the last few days the prices have dropped so maybe a trip to our cider mills are in the picture soon.
I haven't seen a play since the
6th grade..I saw the Mikado and Peter Pan...It was awesome! It was the same time that the 6th grade put on the play the Mikado. It was so much fun dressing in a kimono. One great experience.
I LOVE "Gone with the Wind!" every now and then I catch it on cable and will watch it. Classic!
Have a great weekend
I make good stock and start with a large amount of liquid that I allow to reduce by simmering it away. It's then concentrated and flavorful. First I take the chicken in pieces and sear it, I add onion, carrot, garlic, celery and salt and pepper. Then water and broth then simmer to reduce. Tasty.
I had a perfect Saturday with my friend too. We went shopping.
Driving around and taking pictures with friends is always a good time. Especially with the beautiful Fall weather. Looking forward to seeing your pics.
It's all good. Gone wth the wind fabulous movie, eh-eh book. Sounds like a fun plan. You can keep hanging in there for another week. Feel that hand on your shoulder guiding you and giving silent support? That me.
Sounds like a fun day. You get my birthday OFF! Sweet! I'm taking it off but we don't get it as a holiday like you do! (It just happens to be on Columbus Day, too. Hee hee!) Even so, we don't get Columbus Day off!
Enjoy! Glad you are feeling better!
oh, and I know nothin' about soup making. sorry.
I have never made soup from scratch, I always use bouillon cubes. Then I ad all the good stuff.
It sounds like you had a really nice time with your friend. You must do things like that more often.
I hardly read anymore. Whenever I pick up a book, I fall asleep after just a few pages, during the day too, so forget that.
Have a lovely Sunday, enjoy it all you can. xoxoxoxox
I like to make soup but always use a stock cube or something and then throw in all the other things.
Glad you are feeling better.
It's got warmer here again. Its not my most favourite time of the year, though the leaves look good on the trees! I prefer Spring!
I guess as they get older, you have to leave the kids to make their own fun. I sometimes wish I did know how to make good broth but I'm afraid the farmer would have me making it everyday!!

Believe it or not, I've never seen Gone with the Wind. Crazy, huh?
I grew up in a household that watched Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, and other crazy ass movies. None of the classics though.
I do what rudee does except I start with a can of campbell's chicken broth. And if I want a creamier soup, I also add a can of cream of celery soup. And then I add enough water to go a couple inches above the chicken pieces and simmer until it's soup...
'Joy of Cooking' can make you nuts, in my opinion. Life doesn't have to be that hard! :)
mannnn...there is nothing better than getting a new magazine in the mail and going to bed!!!!
great pictures!
Here's one of my blog friends chicken stock recipe - http://pieceoheaven.blogspot.com/2008/10/chicken-stock-old-fashioned-way.html.
Have a good week - Kellan
Your day sounds fabulous. Looking forward to your photos!!
I typically buy the canned chicken broth for my "homemade" chicken soup.
When I make stock I start with a lot of water too. I put my chicken in an 8 qt. stockpot, add onion, carrot, celery, whatever, then a couple of pinches of kosher salt, some peppercorns, sometimes some herbs, sometimes not. Then I fill the pot with water and let it simmer (not boil) for about an hour and a half, remove the chicken, debone and let cool and keep simmering the stock a while longer. I always end up with at least enough for soup, often more that I freeze in 2cup portions.
Hope that helps.
Your drive sounds wonderful. I used to love doing that--we pretty much stopped when our 5 and 8 year olds came along--they do not enjoy that!
I remember Mom taking me to the theater to see a showing of Gone With the Wind - still an all time favorite of mine. I hope to do that with my daughter.
OMG I LOVE Gone with the Wind! I wish I could come over and watch it with you!
Okay, here is how I make my chicken soup, or stew, or whatever you call it.
I boil a whole chicken in a big ole pot. I put onions in it, lots of pepper, salt, garlic powder, and whatever other season I feel like putting in there. I boil that until the chicken is done. I take the chicken out and put it in a collander, let it cool, then pull all the meat off. I put that back in the pot, add potatoes and carrots and noodles. I usuall have to add a lot more salt and pepper and seasoning to taste but my family LOVES it! I always think I'll have some left over, but I usually don't. And I don't make dumplings because they have NEVER turned out right!
Sounds like she had a good birthday. Did she say that she did?
Sounds like a wonderful day.
definitely go with the canned broth! You do, after all, have 3 teenage girls--and they will never know the difference. I bet you won't either.
Thanks so much for your comment, and support, on my blog!
That sounds lovely. I'm so glad that Melanie had a great birthday, sounds like she's got herself a great best friend. I'm glad you got a three day weekend yourself. :) Would you believe I've only ever seen a few minutes of Gone With The Wind? I'll have to watch that one of these days.
